At Australia’s Oyster Coast, our commitment to sustainability doesn’t end at the oyster shed. From the estuaries we farm to the packaging that carries our oysters to market, every step of our process is carefully considered to minimise impact on the environment and reflect the values we share with our farmers, chefs, partners and customers.
One important part of this journey is packaging. This is something often overlooked, but critically important.
Choosing Packaging That Does Better
We’ve partnered with Close the Loop Group and Oceanic Agencies to ensure that all of our seafood packaging, across our oyster product brands including Appellation Oysters and Oystersmiths, arrive in fully recyclable trays and boxes. The clear trays we use are 100% recyclable, meaning they can go straight into household yellow recycling bins. They proudly bear the recycling symbol and meet stringent standards including complying with the 2025 National Plastic Targets, NSW Plastics Plan, AS2070-1999 Plastics Materials for Food Contact Use; ISO 9001:2015, and BRC (British Retail Consortium) global standards.
It’s not just about ticking boxes. It’s about doing the right thing and making it easier for everyone along the way to do the same.
A Practical Example: The Narooma Oyster Festival
This approach proved its worth at the Narooma Oyster Festival, where we previously used compostable trays for serving oysters. However, due to the absence of compostable bins this year, we made the switch to our clear recyclable trays for our premium dining activation on Friday night and for the Rock Oyster Lounge on Saturday, allowing guests to confidently place their used clear plastic trays into the recycling bins. We also rolled this out to the festival run oyster bars. We also used recyclable non-coated cardboard trays at our Oyster Farmers' Alley stand.
It was a small but significant step, showing how adaptable, practical sustainability choices can make a difference in real-world settings.
Still Learning, Still Improving
While we’re proud of what we’ve achieved with recyclable packaging, we’re already looking to the future. Our next ambition is to move all our packaging onshore in Australia so that we have more visibility over the supply chain. Additionally, we are exploring fully biodegradable options; packaging that not only recycles but breaks down harmlessly over time.
As a vertically integrated business that sees the full journey of an oyster, from farm to fork, we know that responsibility travels with it. And that means packaging that respects both our oceans and our customers.
We’re proud to be moving in the right direction, one tray at a time.
